The Castor Chronicles #1. Author: Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl.
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.
If you’ve ever wondered what paranormal romance is like, I think you can read this to get a feel as to what it’s all like. It manages to embody almost all the clichés. MC is stuck in a boring little town, plans to get out as soon as possible. Until a new kid moves in, of course – a gorgeous, strange new kid whom nobody else likes at all. Cue the insta-love. And angst. New girl is special, of course, because she’s actually magical. Just like her entire family. And she’s doomed, because of the family curse, which will turn her Dark or Light on her sixteenth birthday without giving her a choice.
Sexual content: Girls in immodest clothing, boys trying to hook up with the girls, and a couple heavier make-out sessions.
Language: Scatological terms mostly, a few d***
Violence: Two men are killed, one nearly commits suicide, windows shatter, teen girl is nearly magically killed.
