The Immortals #1. Author: Tamora Pierce.
Young Daine’s knack with horses gets her a job helping the royal horsemistress drive a herd of ponies to Tortall. Soon it becomes clear that Daine’s talent, as much as she struggles to hide it, is downright magical. Horses and other animals not only obey, but listen to her words. Daine, though, will have to learn to trust humans before she can come to terms with her powers, her past, and herself.
Daine is not as interesting as some of her stronger women warriors, and her magic with animals must be taken as a fantasy-world item; there is no effort made to make the animals realistic. However, it was a pleasant read, and I was glad that there was much less romance/innuendo than some of her other books. It seems almost younger.
Sexual content: One kiss on the cheek. Man flirts lightly with a girl. MC doesn’t know who her father is. Two married characters kiss. A married man flirts slightly with a girl, but his wife is present and knows he’s only friendly.
Language: 2 derogatory names, some exclamations of ‘gods!’ and an interesting phrase – ‘odd’s bobs’.
Violence: Mention of a past wherein a girl’s family was killed by bandits, and the bandits killed by animals. Several Stormwing attacks, several stormwings are killed with arrows and one is torn apart by horses. Spidren killed. A rabbit found dead of fright. A dragon is coated in liquid fire and dies near-instantly. An entire fleet of ships is destroyed and the crew presumably drowned.
Love Triangle: No.
